The Met Gala 2013 ~ Punk Chaos to Couture

The Costume Institute Gala, otherwise known as The Met is an annual ball to celebrate the opening of the Metropolitan Museums fashion exhibit at the Costume Institute. Hosted by Vogue and is regarded as one of New York’s top annual social event. This year the theme was Punk ~ Chaos to Couture.

Well, with such a fabulous theme to work from this year, I was expecting all the stars and celebs to go ‘all out’ and to have punky fun hairstyles, but to my dismay I was slightly disappointed to see so many celebs that seem to have missed out on the PUNK memo, including the Vogue editor in chief herself, Anna Wintour, who was dressed in a floral pink number with her signature bob.  I mean, if you don’t go overboard for the red carpet for this theme, then when can you?

Anyway after scouting around online, I have chosen some of my favorite styles on celebs who I thought made a huge effort to work the theme, so whether you like them or not, you have to give them props for trying…

Such a shame that some celebs such as Jessica Biel, Olivia Wilde, Kate Beckinsale, Miranda Kerr, Kristin Stewart (surprisingly) and  Anna Wintour (organizer) to name afew that chose to be so boring and safe.  Come on ladies.. lighten up, it would’ve been fun!

Dekko’s Daily Grind ~ Lilac Belle

My lovely goddaughter was thinking of chopping all her hair off like Charlize Theron’s so I suggested that she colored her long blonde hair Lilac before she did the chop, And Yay, she agreed!

Dekko’s own lovely colorist and co-owner Jodi Ninomiya offered to do the color for her, so Belle came into Dekko for her makeover.

First I want to show you Belle’s hair before, here she is with her blonde slices, this was the base for the Lilac to go in..

Jodi added slices/panels of deeper purple in foil and used a pale Lilac shade to cover the rest of her hair up, here’s the lovely colors used and showing you while it was on the hair…

And here’s Belle with her gorgeous result, sorry the photos are abit dark, end of the night! Thanks to Jodi for staying so late to make Belle so cute, funky and Lilac…

OK Belle, next you can cut it all off and I’ll show you that too as I’m sure it’ll be just as adorable!

Why Does Hair Frizz

Here’s an old but useful blog post from a few years ago….

Well, to be quite honest with you 8 times out of 10, its whoever is handling the hair that is making it frizz! (The other causes being weather, pregnancy or health)

How many times have I heard people saying that they cant wear their hair curly/wavy because it gets too frizzy? Once I delve further into the way the hair is handled it becomes very clear to me that its frizzy because people don’t really know how to style/deal with it.

So it boils down to the fact that when someone has wavy hair, each time you wash your hair you need to make a decision on whether to dry it straight or curly, nothing in between. The in betweeny is the part that leaves the hair frizzy.

When hair is wavy and you decide to either comb it or drag your fingers through it when wet, this action will partly pull out the waves, and some of the hair will stay straight and other parts will curl back up, leaving a very unruly sight with the mixture of straight to curly hair. (Frizz)

See examples below..

In other words, if you want healthy looking curls/waves, you must not disturb the hair while it is drying OR if you want it to be straight, you must go the whole hog and dry it thoroughly straight with a brush. (see example below) If you decided to dry your hair straight that day and got lazy half way through and decided to drop the brush and dry it roughly, this will create the worst of the frizzies.

My Pick ~ Orlando Pita

King of catwalk hair and hair mentor on TV the show ‘Shear Genius”, Orlando Pita is often renowned for his elaborate and Avant garde hairdo’s. But for this Vogue shoot he kept the styles (whether wigs or their own hair) very cutesy short and clean looking.. I chose them as my pick because I find them very fresh looking.

Dekko’s Daily Grind..Trac

My client Trac is constantly changing his hair up, he goes from long to short and back to long again in no time. After wearing his hair on the longer messier side for quite some time, Trac decided he wanted to try something abit neater and more groomed looking – as in the 30’s Clark Cable look.

Here’s Trac when he came in:

We used the razor to give his  course Asian hair abit more softness and movement, even though we knew we would be combing it back, we still wanted the hair to move around more so it would be easier for him to style. During the haircut we were aware not to cut the hair too short that it would be too stiff to style, we left it all slightly longer than we would have with fine soft hair. It was then styled using Cool Grease (a styling product from Japan that is water based but leaves the hair looking slightly wet but doesn’t look stiff like gel does). The hair was then combed back into place and left to dry.

The funny thing about this haircut was that Trac did not tell us he was having his hair cut for his wedding afew days later until after we finished cutting it! It’s a bloody good job it came out really well and went with his wedding outfit perfectly! Talk about being casual about it! Congratulations Trac!
