Different Types of Layers…

Have you ever wondered what type of layers to ask for when you go to the hairdressers? Here are some ideas and facts to think about before you decide.
There are not very many combinations to think about when talking about layers. There are afew variation of things like – thickness, length, fringe, and messiness. These range from long heavy layers, medium length layers with heavy bottom, lighter short layers with wispy edges, rocker edgy very short layers with wispy ends or ultra funky disconnected layers.

Each one can then be combined with either a long fringe, sweepy fringe, blunt, soft, shorter fringe, or even chunky funky very short fringe.
From there you would need to decide whether to have blunter ends (cut with scissors) or wispy ends (cut with a razor) From these few options you can safely decide which one is more suitable for your needs. Finish with great styling products, like my sea salt spray Tousle – for that messy beach look

Long Heavy layers (as seen on Angelina above)– this one is good for people who like their hair to look abit neater, the heavier layers are good for keeping waves weighed down, therefore the blow dry stays longer and hair stays in place longer.

This one is also showing long layers but done on shorter hair but again notice how the hair is neater looking because the weight of the layers weigh the hair down. Both were cut with scissors.

On Jocelyn (above) the layers are taken shorter but still quite controlled and heavy, still cut with scissors but this time the layers are chopped into abit to show more wispiness towards the ends. Jocelyn’s layers were combined with a longer side swept fringe. Use Bounce curl cream for hair with any type of wavy or curl movement.

Here we have a combination of a long fringe and short layers, cut with the razor to bring out the waves as much as possible, this is ideal for people who prefer their hair to look messier, hence all the weight taken out and the wispy edges.

Lastly, here’s Livia cut by Joni, with her razored short rocker layers, hair is made more extreme by taking the top layers very short, this is for the ones who love alot of texture and enjoy their hair standing out more from the crowd.
So hopefully, armed with these facts and ideas you will be able to go into a salon and describe your dream layers more.

New Product Alert!!

Introducing Renovo™ ~ ‘Biotin Hairline Enhancer™’ designed for women.

Has anyone noticed their hairline receding as we age? I certainly have! My right side started to recede much further than my left. This was the reason why I was prompted to create a product that would help thicken up those areas. After extensive research we have found a solution that works really well and by applying the special peptides topically we can get directly to the problem area.  Check out my very own before and after shots taken over 3 months.  Renovo™ will be available soon but stay tuned for our Pre-Launch special. Product shot by TJBender and design by Mark Gartland.

Microblading

I first heard about this when one of my clients decided to go to New York to try this new technique called Microblading for sparse and thin eyebrows. Its a technique that creates more natural looking brows rather than the old type of tattooed brows that look blocky and faded.

A form of tattoo whereby the operator will use a special microblading pen (looks like an exacto knife to me) to draw individual strokes of hair to either fill, define, cover gaps or totally reconstruct to whatever shape is desired, ink is then added onto the lines to make it permanent. Here’s a picture taken from the popsugar.co.uk  to show you the look of the brows.

Meanwhile I came across this article from the Revelist that shows that microblading has gone one step further to use on hairlines to fill in receding areas, this could be a game changer for all the ladies who are losing their hairlines either with age or pregnancy. My Favorite ‘50 Shades of Grey’ Character ~

I, like everyone else went to watch 50 shades of Grey last night ~ on opening night. Yes I read all the books and absolutely hated them. Which meant that I was  pleasantly surprised that I did not vomit while watching this movie. I’m not here to add yet another review to the other thousands out there but I really wanted to draw attention to my favorite ‘character’ in the movie that caught my attention!

From the very beginning, Anastasia Steele’s fringe (bangs) had a life of its own, I couldn’t help but notice,  it went short, and then longer and back to short again, up and down, choppy to straight, full to split, all within the 90 miles she drove from home to Seattle.

Not that I didn’t like them, in fact we (as in me and my Dekko hairdresser mates who went) were convinced clients would now be coming in asking for the Anastasia fringe. Yikes – which part? Dakota Johnson’s hairdresser Mark Townsend will be happy his client is the talk of the town, although he didn’t actually cut the fringe for the movie, sorry I cant give credit to whoever did do it.

But anyway, it must’ve been really really tough for the continuity team, I know how hard it is to keep a choppy fringe the same every time you cut it, let alone for every scene! Anyway, just for fun, here’s what I mean…

And in my humble opinion, If I were a client and wanted this fringe, I would take this picture in to show the stylist..

The Real Star of Gone Girl ~ Rosamund Pike’s Bob

The latest ‘IT’ girl is wearing the latest haircut! Lets look no further than Tina Haukjaer Anderson, she should know a thing or two about it ~ she created it!

Rosamund Pike’s undercut bob shape has been the buzz of Hollywood ever since that fantastic thriller ‘Gone Girl’ came out last month, based on the novel by Gillian Flynn.

I would say if Ben Affleck hadn’t gone all full frontal on us, he would’ve got his thunder stolen by Rosamund and her ‘Tina’ bob.

While watching the movie, you can’t help but admire the razor sharp bob that was on the big screen, every movement Rosamund made, the hair swung with her. Even during the dramatic gory scene, her hair looked perfect! So, it does not surprise me to find out that, that haircut was done by a fellow Sassooner, Tina Haukjaer Anderson.  Ah! of course, now it makes sense, Vidal Sassoon, ultimate master of bobs.

Tina works at Vidal Sassoon training School in Beverly Hills as Senior Creative Director. Her expertise was fully utilized when she was called upon to style all the hairstyles for her friend Rosamund Pike’s character Amy Dunne in the movie, including all the wigs.

Here’s abit of Tina’s insight about the hair (excerpt taken from Sassoon Academy)

– “The Gone Girl haircut is classic Sassoon technique with a modern spin,” explained Tina. “All textures can wear this cut – curly, fine, thick, wavy – as long as the cut is tailored and personalized.”
– “The director [David Fincher] requested a seductive bob, so I decided to accentuate Rosamund’s elegant neckline and jawline by keeping the bob short.”

Anyway for those of you who have seen the movie, you know exactly what I mean, and for those who have yet to see it – GO!! Its been a long, time since an actual haircut has made such an impact on women around the world, creating a frenzy of women wanting their hair cut off to the perfect bob. I applaud you Tina for bringing that classic look (with a twist) back to life.

Prediciting the future of color ~

Excerpt taken from Layeredonline.com  ~

‘Straighteners to dye for – we find out what science has in store for our hair

Word in the science lab is that we may soon be waving goodbye to messy DIY dye jobs in favour of a much cleaner way to colour our hair – simply with the swipe of a straightener. Scientists at the University of Mexico and Los Alamos National Labs are developing a state-of-the-art technique using ion beam straighteners – hot irons that can permanently switch the colour of your hair. How does it work? They’ve developed irons that can etch gratings onto individual hairs, creating different patterns so each follicle refracts light differently – by scanning the colour directly onto the hair fibres. Only issue is that it’s permanent. However, the scientists also aim to develop a conditioner that can mimic this effect, which can then be washed out. But before you rush out to buy, research is still in its early stages, and it won’t be making it into our salons any time soon. But good to know it’s not just our phones getting smarter.’
