My Pick..

yooneunhye

I found this picture online of Korean actress, singer and model Yoon Eun-Hye and I thought ‘What a cute look she had’!!

Sometimes its hard to make bleach blonde shades look good on Asian hair but Yoon managed to make both shades of blonde work very well, making her Pixie cut unique and fresh looking. Very pretty!

But hey, I guess if your ranked #44 out of Korea’s Top 100 most powerful and influential people in the Entertainment Industry, then you’d better make sure you look ‘mighty fine’ eh?

The Next ‘It’ Girl–Jamie Chung?

My good friend Stevie Wong (check him out) who is up on everything and knows everything there is to know about movies and music and has interviewed every star who’s worth interviewing has spoken…

Take note… Jamie Chung could well be the next big Asian star to emerge from Hollywood. Raised in our hometown of San Francisco, Jamie started her career in MTV’s Real World – based in San Diego. She went on to make movies such as ‘ I now pronounce you Chuck and Larry’, Sorority Row, DragonBall Evolution.

Her next few movies include Sucker Punch (an Action Fantasy Thriller), Hangover 2, and Premium Rush (an action movie with the cute Joseph Gordon Levitt)
Here’s Jamie showing some hair looks and remember to watch out for this cutie and I’m sure as always, Stevie will be right!!!

Volumizing Froth

Prive – Concept VERT – Volumizing Froth
Green volumiser
Part of PRIVE’S new Green Line – this contains certified organic extracts, has no Parabens, DEA, REA or artificial colors, and is never tested on animals, the packaging is also earth friendly and can be recycled.
Classed as the next generation non-aerosol mousse , it gives incredible body, volume and definition.
When I first used this mousse, I loved it, it really did give alot of body and fullness, especially on shorter hair, it wasn’t until I tried it on longer hair that I realized I had to go easier on the application. If too much is applied, it is difficult to wrap the brush around it smoothly. So apply less for longer hair. On shorter hair it is fabby, the amount of body and bounce is incredible. Feels smooth, comes out like a gel and changes into froth while in the palm of your hands to ensure easy application.

Dekko’s Daily Grind–Patricia

Patricia came into Dekko Salon a while ago and had grown her hair long enough so that she could donate it to one of the many organizations that create wigs for people with hair loss with cancer or other diseases. Good for you Patricia.
Anyway as you can see from the pictures below she certainly had a lot of length to work with. We must’ve had about 12 inches that we could cut off and still have a decent shoulder length style.

We decided to give Patricia a style that was around shoulder length, we made sure she had plenty of layers and because her hair is so thick, we took a lot of weight out of it and textured it quite a lot. Because Patricia’s face shape was more on the long side than any other shape, we thought it would be good to give her a softer fringe to balance out the length. We dried it casually with no brush, and then we rolled some styling cream onto the ends just to give it abit more texture.
I must say that we were very pleased with the end result and thought Patricia looked very sexy and
fresh : )
Thanks a lot Patricia for posing and for donating!

Beach Hair..

Davines Sea Salt Primer
Sea salt Spray 2
One of the newer Davines products available, although its amazing how fast this company is churning out new great products. This one reminded me of the Bumble & Bumble Surf Spray, very similar in texture and type, although I did find the Davines (above) to be less ‘matte’ looking once on. I love the way the hair looks with these surfey, beachy products but what I wasnt keen on was the way it felt, very ‘chalky’ and dry. With this Sea Salt Primer, it feels just abit better than others I have used and it instantly gives clumpy chunky beachy hair : )

Maggie Cheung – Asian Goddess..

I’ve been dying to share this post with you on Maggie Cheung (Man Yuk), one of my all time favorite Asian actresses. For those of you who aren’t familiar with Maggie, she has been in a lot of movies, a few being ‘In the Mood for Love’, ‘Irma Vep”’, ‘Hero’, and ‘Clean’.

I had the pleasure in working with Maggie once in Los Angeles, (as well as the gorgeous Michael Wong) for an Ericsson commercial. I just happened to be lucky enough to be at the right place at the right time, just as they were casting for the HK ad campaign, (which turned out to be so successful, it was cited as a case study in the Harvard Business Review). I was hired to do the hair for the main actors including Maggie and Michael and a couple of other Asian American actors. This was such a surprise for me as I was hired before I found out who I would be working on. Initially it was meant to be Gong Li, who had trouble getting her work permit fast enough so it ended up being Maggie instead, much to my delight.

Memories of the commercial:

I found her to be charming and lovely as well as a little mischievous as she kept fluffing her hair to make it more ‘punky’ while the directors of Ericsson kept telling me to ‘calm it down’. She also told me that she’d always wanted to be a hairdresser and even applied to work at Sassoon’s while living in the UK, luckily for her, she didn’t get in, and the rest as you know, is history!

I also found this shoot to be quite challenging as Maggie’s hair was permed into a tight afro look at the time, so my first challenge for the first scene was to flatten and calm it all down into a slicked look!! A fantastic 3 day shoot in Malibu at a gorgeous house, great fun memories. And I must say Thank’s to both Maggie and Michael for their hand written referrals to put towards my green card application to come to the US.

While on the subject of Maggie Cheung, I’ve put together a slideshow of some of her looks that I love.. Enjoy!

Hit or Miss??

There is something soooo wrong with this hairstyle, don’t you think? Wait, though, the color is good, at least the shade is a good one, no signs of triad looking yellow bleach at least!
But his haircut and style is not very good looking for his face shape is it? If only he blended in his fringe with the ‘explosive’ looking bit at the top, it could’ve been a good punky look, but instead with that separation, it looks like he’s got ‘mall’ fringe!!

Hit or Miss, Beauty and the Bath

Sally Hansen’s Stick On Varnish..

I just felt the need to share my latest experience of stick on nail varnish with you. As a hair stylist I had given up on painting my nails because as soon as I had a painted it on, the varnish would either chip off or become goo-ey, because the ingredients in some hair products would start to strip away the varnish.
Then I came across an ad in a magazine introducing Sally Hansen’s stick on Polish!! This I had to try. So for my first attempt I chose a fishnet pattern and following the instructions and not even being that intense about it.

I stuck them on one by one while watching a movie at the same time. I was so surprised at how easy it was. Once it was pressed on, you then use the nailfile provided and file off the excess length! The hardest part about it I thought was the peeling of the backing, and you also have to make sure you choose the right size for each finger, as I had left a couple of half nails undone.
Nevertheless, I still found it successful and the best part about it was that I tested it with allsorts of products that I used on clients hair and I managed to keep it on (no chips or stickiness) for over a week and it stilled looked good. To remove it, you simply use nail polish remover, I’m totally convinced and I’ll be going onto my lace nails next : )
Here’s other colors that are available and also their ‘how to’ pics:

Hair by Dove Palmer Part 3

Update – If the slideshow does not start, view hair pics here..

My final 10 haircut choices done by Dove Palmer…

Dove Palmer is Creative Director for Vidal Sassoon Advanced Academy in London, UK. He also ran the Masters Academy for them too and has made 3 DVD step by step videos as well helped in contributing at least 12 haircut pictures for the Academy Photo collection. I came across Dove’s work on Facebook and instantly LOVED the exquisite work done by him. Funnily enough Dove turned out to have the same mentor as I did back in the day. Stacey Broughton (also from Sassoons) has been his mentor since he went to work for Sassoon’s. I definitely spotted the Stacey traits in the haircuts.

I have so many different styles to show you that he has done over the years that I have decided to split them up into 3 slide shows so that we can make the most of showcasing his work. Dove’s specialty seems to be on Asian hair, whether its because he tours to the Far East to do seminars so much (and for up to 4months at a time) or maybe its because his wife has so many friends that needs to utilise his craft, I don’t know, but whatever it may be, I’m so happy to be able to show you his creative work on Asian hair. Here is the final slide for you, I will certainly be looking out for future work of Dove’s to show you.

Thanks Dove for letting me share with my readers.
