My Pick..

Model Devon Aoki, modeling for Elle magazine. Hair by Harry Josh. I ‘m not much of a up do girl myself (unless its ultra messy) but I like these 2 pics becos the first one looks almost ‘overdone’ and ‘doll-like’ on this model. I particularly like the 2nd picture of the pompadour updo because the shape is well executed and slightly imperfect – right up my alley!

Miho Matsuura

Its always so nice to see a woman stylist being appreciated and acknowledged for her work as a hairstylist and especially being in an industry full of men. There’s definitely not enough women stylists out there, So anyway I wanted to write a post about Miho Marsuura. I know most of you wont have heard of her unlike America’s most famous woman stylist – Sally Hershberger (responsible for the Meg Ryan ‘shag’) but once you see the hairstyle she created for Tao Okamoto, then you’ll know who she is…

My Pick 4 copy
Famous for giving Tao the ‘bowl cut’ that inspired so many others to have the same look. Miho cut the bowl shaped bob for Philip Lim’s ‘09 runway show. Like with Ning (beauty reporter for Marie Claire below) Miho suggests using straighteners to give the hair a flatter silkier look as not all Japanese hair is straight and smooth. Here she is at work at Twiggy Salon, Japan..

Dekko’s Daily Grind.. Michelle

Showcasing some more work from Joni at Dekko Salon. Michelle came in with fairly long hair and wanted to have a change. After a consultation, Joni went about her work and created a shorter cute, messy fresher style for Michelle.

Cut with a razor to give more texture and create messier lines, but still keeping in with the graduated shape through the back to give it a nicer profile, Joni created a shredded asymmetric bob shape that has been styled with styling cream to bring out Michelle’s natural movement in the hair. Nice Joni, thanks for posing for me Michelle : )

Black–15 in 1 treatment

15 in 1 MIRACLE treatment

I must admit when I first saw this product describe itself as a ‘miracle’ treatment I was skeptical, of course, it takes a lot to feel comfortable to use that word for a product description, but hey after using it, I feel like they are pretty close in most cases! I have used this product quite a lot so I feel I can give fairly accurate judgment on it.

When I first tried this, becos it was a liquidy spray I felt that it couldn’t do that much, but as I started to blow dry it, I found that even with using your fingers only, the hair starts to feel very soft and frizz free. On finer hair, it almost doesn’t even need the brush, but on afew occasions when I have used it on ultra coarse frizzy hair it doesn’t work so great and even with pulling it through with a brush, it doesn’t quite do it! But for every one in 30 that it doesn’t do that much for, I must admit I have become a fan : )

The only complaint I have is the design and size of the bottle doesn’t quite fit well into my smaller hands. I don’t have the strength to pump and spray with one hand while I cover my clients face with the other, so I have to uncover the face so that I can do the 2 handed spray with one hand underneath. But I guess people with normal sized hands will be fine.

Anyway, FYI, here is their own description of the product:
A deeply nourishing treatment rich in botanicals, proteins and key nutrients, providing total care for soft, silky feel good beautiful hair. Adds shine/softens and smooth’s/detangles/prevents frizz and flyaways/moisturizes/ repairs dry damaged hair/protect against heat styling/seals and protects hair color/prevents split ends/ promotes scalp circulation/stops hair breakage/ strengthens hair/ enhances natural body/ heals hair shaft/ prevent scalp itch.

Available in 2 sizes, 1fl oz and 3.3fl oz.

My Pick..

Came across this guy’s haircut, and even though I’ve seen it many times, I think this guy carries it off without coming across too soft or feminine, like most do.

Maybe it’s the bit of facial hair but it manages to keep a more rugged look, even though it has all the overly wispy ends which I always go on about so much, for some reason, I like this one, it works for me (as Steven Tyler would say, all the time)

What causes hair loss in women? Final part

Is Rogaine™ effective for women?
Rogaine or minoxidil is valuable adjunctive therapy for both men and women with hair loss. It does not work in all individuals and only a trial of use [six months ] will give a definitive answer as to it’s merits in any one individual. The exact mechanism of action of this drug is not well understood however it has been demonstrated to be capable of lengthening the anagen or active growth phase of the hair within the hair growth cycle. This translates clinically into healthier hair for a longer period of time. Rogaine is the only FDA approved medication to slow or stop hair loss in women.

Can women take Propecia™ ?
Propecia is not FDA approved for use in women. Women of childbearing age should not take this medication because of its association with birth defects in the developing male fetus. Studies conducted using 1mg finasteride in post-menopausal women demonstrated the agent not to be effective in this patient category. The prospect exists that a higher dosage may be beneficial in this group of individuals, however good studies showing its efficacy and safety are yet to be completed.

What causes hair loss in women? Part 2

Are surgical hair transplants a treatment option for women?
Depending on the nature and degree of hair loss women may or may not be candidates for hair transplantation surgery. Goals and expectations need to be carefully reviewed in advance of contemplating surgery and if there exists medical questions pertaining to the nature of the loss or its future course, then medical laboratory investigation may additionally be warranted.

Why are some women not candidates for hair restoration surgery?
Hair transplantation involves the relocation of hair from an area of greater density and fullness in the back of the scalp to an area of hair loss on top of the head. Women who have generalized thinning do not possess sufficient reserves of hair to allow for the removal of hair without deleterious effects upon the source of the donation. Additionally in these instances the usual source of donor hair may not contain healthy hair which will survive and grow when transplanted. In hair transplantation, as in many surgical procedures, it is important to balance the potential gain against the possible risks or downside when contemplating a procedure that is not reversible.
