Dekko’s Daily Grind – Meng

Here’s some more work from Dekko to share with you…

The very first time Meng came into Dekko to see us, she had long hair, the texture looked fairly straight and it was slightly frizzy. We actually chopped all the hair off that first time and revealed some fabulous curls that had been hidden away underneath all the weight of the hair. Here’s a photo of Meng before we attacked her with the scissors!

Because we did the haircut before I even started writing my blog the starting point with the before and afters below start at the grown out length of that first haircut.
Here’s Meng after her hair had grown out about 4months, I know she still looks cute but the length again made it look frizzy again and the shape was lost and heavy looking.

We cut the hair using both a razor and scissors. The back area was taken in more but left long enough to see from the front view. We decided to work on an asymmetric shape through the front area. The whole of the head was chopped into and texturized to give the curls more freedom to stick out and do whatever it wants!

We styled Meng’s hair with Davines’s Invisible Styling Paste, rubbing it into the ends so the ends stick together more and using a diffuser we dried the hair without disturbing it too much. Once dry, we messed the hair up and shook it around abit.

Modern Curly Perm….Maria

Here we have another perm done by Jodi Ninomiya from Dekko Salon, this time we have a much curlier look.
Maria came in with wavy-ish hair, and wanted to have a change of texture. After the consultation, both Maria and Jodi decided that a much curlier spiral look would be better than a soft perm as Marias hair is quite heavy and thick. I would like to add that personally i think Maria looked so good with both hair textures because she wears her hair well with her style of clothing and confidence that Jodi had her job made abit easier because of this factor…

As mentioned Maria has wavy hair already, her front area was a little bit too short to perm so Jodi wove it out to blend with the parts that would be permed. The perm solution that Jodi used was by Goldwell – Definition for Normal Hair. She used 2 different rods, white and orange colored and it was left to process for 20 mins. The perm rods were positioned in a downward spiral.

As we all know with curly hair, it is so important not to disturb the curls while it is drying, this will ensure you have a definite prominent head of non-frizzy curls. Use a curling cream of some kind and either use a diffuser or leave it to air-dry, the diffuser usually gives abit more lift.

Dekko’s Daily Grind – Jason

Asian hair can sometimes be so thick that it can easily look too bulbous and round. On guys hair, this is the case when the sides have been taken down short and then the weight build up is too low, creating a ‘bowl’ look.
Here’s Jason with his old hairstyle..


We decided to go shorter with Jason so that the weight line through the sides can be lifted higher, this not only gives a trimmer look to the face shape, but it gives the haircut a ‘squarer’ masculine look.


As you can see, the top area has been left slightly longer and razored to give it more texture, and the scissor over combed area has been left to blend into the hairline in a natural way and not clippered into a hard outline, which I personally don’t like because especially with coarse hair it can make it look like you have a ‘lid’ on your head.

Soft Perms..

I seem to be talking alot about perms lately, but that’s because we have been seeing an influx of them coming into our salon (Dekko)

Baya came into Dekko to see Jodi Ninomiya about a soft perm, we all know that perms can be disastrous under the wrong technician but I wanted to share this with you to show you how a good perm should look, especially on Asian hair where it can become TOO curly.

This is Baya before the perm, sorry that the photo is abit dark but you can make out that the hair is pretty flat and fairly straight apart from the curled ends:

Snapshot 2009-12-16 23-25-04The rods that Jodi decided to use were large and medium mixed. The perm solution was Definition by Goldwell, it was for Normal Hair and it was left to process for 25 minutes.

DSC00243Once complete the hair is dried using a diffuser so that the curls are not disturbed, if disturbed too much, it can cause the hair to look frizzy as I talked about in my post about curly hair.

The end result came out great, just enough movement and body without looking too fake or artificial. Well done Jodi and thanks to Baya for posing for this post.

Fringe Sample..

After reading my post on fringes, Shelley decided she wanted to go ahead and give a fringe a try. Normally Shelley keeps her front area long for a few reasons;

1. She has slightly wavy hair,

2.She felt like her face was too round to have a fringe.

So as shown below, because we kept the length slightly longer, the waves are kept under control and because we gave her a fringe that still allows her forehead to show through, it does not cut the face off and does not make her face look rounder. This shows that fringes can work on most people if you take things under consideration.

Dekko’s Daily Grind – Sarah

Sarah is one of those lucky people who has naturally curly hair, although we have often joked about it, as hers is quite soft that sometimes, especially when her hair was shorter, if she hadn’t styled it right, it can look abit like a shampoo and set!!

Luckily with her hair now worn longer, the curls look better with the right cut, and right amount of layers, but as you can see from the before pictures, if the layers are too long including the fringe area, the hair lays much flatter on top and gives too sensible a look.

So after using scissors rather than a razor (as we did not want the ends to look too wispy and dry), we took the layers much shorter on top, took alot of weight out by chopping into the hair throughout but mainly on top and then we sliced the fringe off quite short to frame the face more. We then re-wet the hair after the cut and used Leave-In conditioner throughout the hair and twisted medium size sections and dried it with a diffuser. The overall effect is lighter in weight and a younger funner look! Thanks Sarah!

Dekko’s Daily Grind – Shelley

Shelley has had longer hair for a very quite some time and simply wanted to go shorter just for a change, but because Shelley always looks so great with her long hair, our challenge here was so to give her the change as well as keeping her looking as cute as ever!!

We cut several inches from the length of hair, we then cut square layers into the interior, making sure the layers on the crown area were short enough to give it a slightly rocker feel.We kept the ‘sweepy’ feel to the fringe but took it all alot shorter around the front to give it more movement and texture.

Dekko’s Daily Grind- Trac

I don’t get much opportunity to show some men’s haircuts so I’m happy to share with you not only a guys haircut but a ‘funky’ guys haircut, from my daily work from Dekko.

Trac changes his hairstyle quite regularly, and his hair was slightly overgrown from his last short haircut. We figured it was time for a change, and to go abit shorter and messier than usual.

We used the razor to give the hair a messy uneven look, and also because the razor allows us to take out alot of the bulk while keeping the length. I am always aware of how much hair I am razoring through because I didn’t want the end result to look like a Japanese over-razored pop star!! I also find it important to keep it looking less feminine when working with the razor as it gives softer edges, but with the right amount of texture and layers, we can get a soft but funky guys haircut!

Dekko’s Daily Grind- Haydee

Sharing some more salon work with you…

Haydee came into the salon and her hair was way overgrown. Her hair is thick and heavy but had some movement to it. Her complaint was that it always seemed too heavy and the front piece was always hanging over her face.

We decided to razor the the hair throughout and we took of the front piece so it didn’t hang in her eyes constantly. We also shortened the whole haircut so it looked abit fresher and perkier.

Dekko’s Daily Grind – Karen

Sometimes we get the odd clients who come in for a haircut and then we don’t see them for almost a year, meanwhile their hair is down their back and they come in, cut it off and start all over again.

Personally I really don’t mind this, because it shows that a haircut can be so well done that it can last such a long time, and it can be enjoyed throughout the various stages of growth.

Here’s Karen, coming into Dekko after about 9months, she trims her own fringe in between haircuts to keep the front looking fresher. The curls were made more definite as she had her hair tied up all day.

We decided to cut the hair almost back to shoulder length, put alot of layers into it and framed the face with alot of movement and layering. We cut the hair using scissors as Karen’s hair is on the finer side and we then blow dried it straight but bouncy using Prive Weightless Amplifier.
