Tipping Etiquette in Salons..

In my lifetime of working in salons I always hear clients asking about tips, who to tip, how much to tip etc etc. So I’m here to try to explain briefly how it works in hair salons..

Being from England myself, the rules of tipping vary alot compared to the US, it seems that here in the US, it’s almost compulsory to tip wherever or whatever you do, i.e. eating, riding in cabs.. Whereas in the UK, you tip when you feel like feel like tipping someone for their service and you are happy with it etc, but as we know, tipping varies so much in different countries, so if your unsure, you could always ask the receptionist for advice before going somewhere.

So for the most part, in the US, most people tip the hair stylists/colorists between 15-20% of the service, (more if they are very happy) and the shampoo person (who alot of people forget about) will usually get anything from $2 – $20 depending on the client and how happy with the service they are feeling. Sometimes even the receptionist will get a tip from regular clients who appreciate the receptionist ability to get them their appointments when they need/want.

I have read alot of articles about tipping where they say that the owner need not be tipped!! Now I’m not just saying this because I am an owner, but I just don’t get where this came from? I can understand if the salon is largely based on commission stylists who make the salon owners alot of money but for smaller salons where the stylists all work on a chair rental basis, these owners don’t make a huge commission on others and therefore work just as hard as everyone else so why shouldn’t they get tipped like others? Others may disagree but I’ll bet you the ones that disagree are owners of huge salons!

On special occasions, where a stylist has gone out of their way to fit you in after hours, it would be a nice gesture to show your appreciation by tipping them more than you usually do, and for occasions like Christmas, it is totally up to the clients whether they give a special tip or not, it is certainly not expected but a great gesture if you do.

How you choose to give the tip is up to you, most salons will provide an envelope for you to put your tip into, you should write your name as well as theirs on the front, it would be easiest to give it to reception who will hand them out to the stylists at the end of the day, altho some people prefer to give them directly to the stylist, but remember it can be abit awkward as the stylists could have wet or sticky hands from working and may not have a pocket to put it into.

My Pick..

I love this hair (both styling and color) so much that I wanted to show you the pictures separately so you could see them better. This is Rinko Kikuchi, a Japanese actress from Japan. You may remember her from the movie Babel with Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchet.

The hair is styled by Keith Carpenter (from the Wall Group) for Marie Claire, but what I love most about the hair is the block coloring through the top – refreshing to see color on top instead of all the Ombre Coloring we’ve been seeing so much of lately which puts the color underneath and below. I know it means high maintenance but as you can see with the bit of roots coming through, it still looks great.

Fact…

According to L’Oreal Professionnel (printed in Marie Claire May 2011 issue)

American’s spend $1.4 billion a year on hair products – more than China, France, Brazil and India combined!!

Now how do I get them to spend just one million on mine?? Ha!

Multi-Purpose Sprays..

Bumble and Bumble’s Blondish Hair Powder:

I’ve always admired Bumble & Bumble for their styling products, for me who is a cutter rather than a technician, I am always on the look out for styling products that work well. I have always felt that Bumble & Bumble is one of those companies that concentrated on their styling products rather than cleansing products, this was a first that I saw, which has inspired me to do the same one day.
When Bumble & Bumble first brought out a ‘dry shampoo’ I loved it. Since then they have progressed to spray colored versions of it. They claim to not only add fullness and enhance colors and blend roots, they also dry cleanse and to get an extra day out of your blow dry, I was very excited to try them, and did so quite afew times, but I have to say I found these colored hair powders to be abit too sticky for my liking, and I felt that although it definitely gave the hair body, I couldn’t put my fingers through my hair as it left color in my nails and fingers. But all in all, I have heard very good reviews from others about it who don’t mind the stickiness or the color in the nails, so good one guys!

Hit or Miss….

So what do you think? I think he’s a singer from a band called Big Bangs TOP. Not really my cup of tea but I have to say, at least they didn’t give him bleached out yellow Asian hair, right?

Going back to my ‘way too feminine’ look for Asian guys article. I really don’t think this one can be helped really, what with that baby faced look, how can he NOT look fem?

In Style Virtual Makeover..

Well, we’ve heard of them before, online makeovers where you can upload your photo and try out new hairstyles!!

Here’s In Style’s version of it, follow the link and give it a try.

Although fun to do, I have always been quite pleased that we as hairdressers will not be replaced by computers! How can someone make a program that will look at someones hair and face shape and give them a good consultation, or give advice as to how one should style a certain type of hair, or what style should be cut to suit someone the best. Hope I’m not wrong : (

In reality, I feel these programs give a false illusion as the hair thickness, texture, color and everything else is not the same as the person trying out the style, so please don’t take them too seriously as in most cases it wouldn’t do anything but give you a very rough idea of what it might look like if you half close your eyes!!

Thanks to Kelly Cakar for sharing.

My Pick..

Taken from a DSquared Ad, its most probably a wig but hey, I liked the total look of it a lot.

Love the bowl shape as well as the way it has slightly chunky edges and a little bit of layering throughout the edges. We used us call this the pageboy/halo style back in the Vidal Sassoon UK days.

If anyone is interested, there’s a great new educational website that features a heck of a lot of talent showing alot of haircuts and colors. Here is a clip of a video of a classic Halo haircut demonstrated by Stacey Broughton. (Ex Artistic Director from Sassoons)

Nice!!

Great Reviews..

There really is nothing like a couple of great reviews to start the day off… Thank Lindsay and Amanda …

I know I’ve said this before but your dry shampoo/texturizer is quite honestly the best stuff ever. I even use it on my clean, dry hair to give it more density and texture. I’ve never found anything else like it and I’ve tried so many things! I’m half asian but I totally inherited the asian hair gene full-on. I have thick individual strands of hair but sometimes (especially in the bangs area) I can see a sparse look. It’s not like balding, but just sparse…especially if my hair gets oily…know what I mean? Anyway, your product totally helps it look less sparse, too. I’ll be a lifelong supporter of JuJuChan!

I can’t wait to see what else you have up your sleeve!

xoxo,
Lindsay

Finally a product that does what it says!!! My hair is long, fine and extremely straight, because of this my hair tends to weigh itself down and on those days that I didn’t wash my hair well let’s just say it hasn’t always been pretty….until I started using Juju Chan texture powder!!!!

Trust me I’ve tried them all the dry shampoos that promise your hair will look like you just washed it…NOT! The products that promise more body….ugh those are the worst. They last 5 mins and then you are stuck with gross product in your hair and it’s still flat…FAIL!!!
I came across this product by chance and after that first time using it (without knowing where to get it) I ran to Sephora to see if they carried it….they didn’t and I was completely shocked. How could a product this great not be in there stores?! Luckily I discovered that you could purchase online or Dekko Salon (yay for me for living so close to my favorite salon 🙂

Since using this product I tend to like my hair more on the days I haven’t washed it, It gives it wonderful body, takes away any grease and I swear it makes my thin hair feel like it’s doubled in thickness. On the days I do wash my hair I still use it to give my hair a bit more oomph. Love love love this stuff!!!

Anime Contacts Lenses..

I have noticed everywhere I look nowadays there are young women (Asian, in particular) who have been walking around with Anime contacts in. For those who don’t know what they are – these are contacts of any color that are larger than the average size contacts that gives the ‘doll’ like look. Of course Lady Gaga had to be there first with her ginormous contacts for her Bad Romance video. I have a suspicious feeling that one day soon I will be writing about her latest shoulder horns when they too become mainstream!!

So here’s the advertising version of one eye in, along with my very own version.. of course I had to try!!

And then this is with both eyes in:

Now here we have the classic pose, to make your eyes look even bigger:

And here are the different colors, Lighter Brown, and for added effect I wore blue in one eye (right) and violet in the other (left)!

Cute right? Yeah, maybe if cute, funky and under 40!! Just to show you how it can look if it starts to wander within the eye.. not a very good look on me.. HaHa! Confused smile Play around and enjoy. There’s many online stores that sell them although a lot are overseas but definitely worth getting some to try out and mess around with.
